Homemade Lotion Bars and Lip Balms
Homemade lotion bars are a great alternative to chemical-containing lotions on the market. This recipe works wonderfully as a lip balm, too. I've had more people tell me that it's the only thing that works for their eczema, rosacea, baby's diaper rash cream, or cracked, bleeding lips!
Ingredients:
I like to use equal parts beeswax and shea butter, then about 1.5 parts coconut oil. Adjust the ratios to make it how you like. If you want to make a whipped body butter, increase the oil content and whip with your stand mixer until light and fluffy.
Beeswax (I read you can use cocoa butter in place if you have allergies.)
Shea Butter
Coconut Oil Silicone Molds, Tin, or Empty Lip Balm Tubes
Essential oils (optional) - we love orange, peppermint, or lavender
Instructions for Lotion Bars:
1. Melt everything gently using a double boiler and stir frequently.
2. Remove from heat, then add essential oils of your choice. I use about 30 drops for one batch. (If I want to do multiple scents, I will add the oils to the molds about half way through adding the mixture, stir, then finish filling.)
3. Pour into the molds.
4. Let them cool on the counter, refrigerator, or freezer if you're in a hurry.
A few notes:
- These lotion bars work wonderfully as diaper cream OR natural sunscreen! Just add a little non-nano zinc oxide and some extra oil (experiment with different kinds - like jojoba oil) when you're melting everything so that it's more spreadable.

Dirt Cheap Microdermabrasion
Baking soda has a myriad of uses beyond baking. I've been using this little "recipe" for over 15 years on my skin, ever since I read it on the side of the box.
Don't use this too often because it can be too harsh if done too often.
To exfoliate your skin, blend together:
approximately 1 tsp. Baking Soda (aluminum free)
and a bit of water or your face soap
Scrub on your face, neck, behind ears, chest. Rinse and moisturize.
Don't use this too often because it can be too harsh if done too often.

Spaghetti Squash with Meaty Tomato Sauce from Fresh4Five
Serves: 6
Prep time: 25 mins
Cook time: 30 mins
Total time: 55 mins
Ingredients
- 2 small spaghetti squash
- 1lb ground chicken meat
- 2 tbsp cooking oil
- 1 large yellow onion chopped
- 3-5 cloves of garlic minced
- 1 cup of diced carrots
- 3-4 celery stalks sliced
- ⅓ cup sliced fresh basil
- ½ cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
- 2 tsp dry oregano
- 1 tsp sea salt (or to taste)
- fresh ground black pepper to taste
- 1-28oz can crushed tomatoes (or homemade)
- ½-1 cup of broth or water
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400F
- Cut squash in half lengthwise. Scoop out seeds and place face down on a baking sheet. Bake for 30-40 minutes (depending on size of squash) until tender and fork pokes through easily.
- Heat a large deep skillet (I used my cast iron) heat oil and add the ground chicken. Brown the chicken for about 10 minutes.
- Add the onion and saute for 5 minutes. Add the garlic, carrots and celery saute for about 5 minutes. Add the mushrooms and seasoning, saute for a moment, add the crushed tomatoes and ½ cup of broth.
- Turn the heat to low, cover the skillet with a lid and simmer until the veggies are tender.
- You may add more broth to achieve your desired sauce consistency.
- To serve, use a fork to scrap the spaghetti squash noodles away from the sides. Put on a plate and top with sauce. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.

Cilantro Lime Chicken
This recipe is very easy to make. I made it with 1 chicken breast, 1/4 lime and the leaves from 3 cilantro stems. You can easily multiply that for however many servings you want to make. It's great over salad, in tortillas, with salsa, guacamole, rice, beans, etc.
Ingredients:
Chicken Breast
Lime
Cilantro
Salt
oil for pan
Instructions:
Place chicken breast in a plastic freezer bag; pound out to desired thinness with meat mallet, the edge of a plate or whatever you can find.
Cut the side of the bag open and peel back the plastic. Salt the chicken on both sides.
Heat skillet on high; drizzle oil in pan. Place the chicken in the pan and cook until browned. Flip.
When both sides are browned, squeeze lime onto chicken - both sides - and sprinkle with cilantro. Cook a bit more, then serve.
